Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a condition resulting in weakening of the bones due to the breakdown of bone structure. Bones are composed of calcium, which is found in the foods we eat. Our bones provide strength and stability allowing us to move without injury. People living with osteoporosis are at risk for injury due to their weakened bones. Osteoporosis can result in curvature of the spine and brittle bones, which easily break.
Risk Factors
- Short statue
- Small frame
- Caucasian race
- Asian race
Prevention
The risk factors listed above are inherited, so we can’t change them. There are other ways to prevent or reduce the risk associated with osteoporosis. One of the most important and effective ways of preventing osteoporosis is consuming 1300 milligrams of calcium during the teenage years. Teenagers usually do not eat calcium rich foods, therefore parents should encourage their kids to take a multi-vitamin or eat balanced diet with calcium rich foods. What are calcium rich foods? They include broccoli, milk, cheese, yogurt, and even calcium fortified orange juice.
Another way to prevent osteoporosis is to participate in weight baring exercise. Exercise prevents osteoporosis by forcing calcium that is in the blood back into the bone, thus strengthening the bone. Weight baring exercises include light weight lifting, aerobics, walking, or jogging. If you are 35 or older talk to your health care provider about taking a calcium supplement to help prevent osteoporosis.
If you already have osteoporosis:
Talk to your health care provider about prescription medications to help strengthen your weakened bones. Have a bone density exam to help evaluate the severity of your osteoporosis and the affected bones. Participate in weight baring exercises. Discuss the risk and benefits of hormone replacement therapy with your health care provider.
